NEED FOR REMEDIATION IN BASIC SKILLS
Entering students are required to take the Accuplacer test. This is an online test (accuplaceronline.com) created by the College Entrance Examination Board and Educational Testing Service. A copy of the test is attached (ATT ACCUPLACER). The College tests all incoming degree seeking first semester students to determine the areas of deficiencies in English and mathematics. In a recent study, 23 percent of students needed one level of remediation as indicated by the Accuplacer test results. Students who show a need for remediation are identified. Their names, Accuplacer scores and recommended math and English courses for their first term are communicated back to the admissions office. To complete the process, the admissions staff then advises each student on recommended first-term courses (including remediation courses) within the chosen degree and curriculum. After the first term, the Student Advisement Center (SAC) handles all student advisement and registration related matters for the remainder of their Vaughn College career.
The Accuplacer measures students’ skills in the following areas:
-
Reading Comprehension
-
Sentence Skills
-
Elementary Algebra
-
