Analysis of Aviation Education in India – Importance of SNIST-VAUGHN Initiative:

The number of Colleges and Universities offering Airline industry related courses are very few compared to the requirements in India and abroad. Sreenidhi and Vaughn College of Aeronautics & Technology, USA have collaborated to offer B.S. Programmes in Engineering and Management relating to airline industry, which is appreciated by one and all.

Aircraft Manufacturing, Airline and Airports are capital intensive industries and employs high salaried staff like Aircraft Designers, Maintenance Engineers, Airline Managers, Airport Managers, Flight Operators, Pilots and others. One outcome of increasing competition in these Industries is shortage of qualified manpower. The death of trained people in India forced new Airlines to employ required personnel from foreign countries as well. As per a survey conducted by the International Air Transport Association and KPMG , “ Staff related costs account for approximately 30 percent of total airline expenditure. Hence major international airlines have shifted their operational facilities from developed countries to developing countries such as India where labor costs are comparatively lower”. This indicates that there is great demand for Engineers and Managers in Airline Industry in India and abroad.

The high demand for staff and short supply of qualified manpower inflated the salaries and put the staff in a position to demand for better terms. For instance, Pilot’s salary which usually averaged between Rs.35,000/- and Rs.50,000/- per month, had increased to almost Rs. 100,000 per month by 204 itself, with some of the most experienced ones even drawing double that. Similar trends were observed in other categories including Airline and Airport Managers and Engineers. There is great ned to establish institutions in India which can provide effective instruction and train large number of qualified manpower.

SNIST-VAUGHN Initiative is welcomed in this context, in an International Conference conducted by the College on “Industry perspective of Aviation Education in India”. Availability of much needed manpower will be boon for Aviation Industry. Our graduates will become partners in the growth of the Aviation Industry.
